Today I went to LeClerc, a hypermarché chain that is near me to buy a bike helmet and some other stuff. I noticed that, unlike its relatives in the US, not only were there bike lanes almost all of the way there (along major roads), but there was a covered bike rack next to the parking lot. Can you imagine people biking to Wal Mart?
On a related note, it took me a while to figure out the bike racks here, as almost all of them are just tiny things where you can stick your front wheel. The trick--here in Blois, people are content to just lock there front tire to the rack, whereas if you did that in the States (or maybe in bigger places here) you'd come back and your wheel would be there but your frame would be gone.
Also, the mail people deliver mail by bike.

I think it's really cool that so many people bike here, but there are also reasons for it. For one thing, gas costs about $8 a gallon, so not everyone can afford to have a car. Two, a lot of towns are a lot smaller/more concentrated, so it's easy to get around by bike.
And as for the mailmen - there are so damn many of them (because of how strong the postal union is) that there is no way they could afford to get cars for them all. Plus, since there are so many of them, their routes are pretty small, which is why they are even able to do their routes by bike in the first place.
A lot of people buy longer bike locks and lock the frame and wheel to the thingy, that's what I do. If you get a bike make sure you have a smaller lock attaching the seat to the frame... seat stealing is popular and what a pain!
